Water Pollution

Water is one of the most vital elements of the human environment, essential for both human and plant life, second only to air. However, water is often polluted in various ways.

Farmers use chemical fertilizers and insecticides to increase crop production, but rain and floods wash these chemicals into rivers, canals, and ponds. Mills and factories also contribute to water pollution by throwing their waste into nearby water bodies. Even boats pollute rivers and canals by discharging oil, food waste, and human waste. In rural areas, unsanitary latrines built on riverbanks further contaminate water. Moreover, unsafe drains flowing into rivers and canals make the problem more serious.

Industrial waste, toxic chemicals, and untreated human waste pollute water severely, causing poisoning and spreading waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea. While clean water is essential for health, polluted water is a major threat to human life.

Water pollution can be prevented through awareness and strict measures. Mills and factories should not be allowed to dump waste into rivers and canals. Boats like steamers, launches, and sailboats must not discharge oil or waste into water bodies. Building latrines on riverbanks should also be stopped. Above all, people should be made aware of the importance of clean water and encouraged to adopt responsible practices.
