The greenhouse effect refers to the gradual warming of Earth’s atmosphere caused by the trapping of heat due to environmental pollution. Many climatologists believe that this effect is a major contributor to global warming.
Several factors are responsible for this phenomenon. These include the destruction and burning of tropical rainforests, traffic congestion in urban areas, rapid industrialization, the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in packaging and manufacturing, and the discharge of pollutants from household detergents like washing powders and dishwashing liquids. The oceans also suffer from pollution caused by industrial waste, oil spills from damaged supertankers, and other maritime disasters.
The primary contributors to global warming are carbon dioxide (CO₂) from burning fossil fuels and deforestation, as well as pollutants like methane and CFCs. Because of these reasons, environmentalists are increasingly concerned about the potentially severe consequences of global warming.
Climatologists predict that by the middle of the next century, global temperatures could rise by as much as 4°C. Such an increase would seriously affect agriculture, destroy or severely damage wildlife and natural habitats, raise sea levels, and flood coastal areas and farmland. In Bangladesh, for instance, rising sea levels threaten to submerge the lower southern regions of the country.
To address this global challenge, it is essential to implement tree plantation programs and adopt measures that reduce sources of CO₂ emissions. By tackling these causes, we can mitigate the impact of global warming and preserve the environment for future generations.
